How to Get Google Reviews as a Painting Contractor: The Post-Job Sequence

Day 7 is the best moment to ask for a review — the client's positive feeling about the work is fresh, and the daily life disruption has just ended.

Reviews drive painting leads more than any other single marketing input — but the mechanism is volume, not just the close rate.

Analysis of 18,000+ home service leads found contractors with strong review profiles generate up to 10x the monthly job volume of low-review competitors at the same cost per lead and same close rate. The compounding effect is real: more jobs means more review opportunities, which means more leads next month. The fastest way to start that flywheel is a structured post-completion sequence.

The post-completion email sequence

Painters using Surfacely get the advantage of automated emails being sent on your behalf. It's our 'Project Completion' email sequence. Up to four painter-branded emails after a project is marked complete in our system. They serve two purposes and are scheduled like this:

  1. Day 0 — Thank you email. Sent immediately on project completion. Painter-branded. Reinforces the relationship while the work is fresh.
  2. Day 7 — Review request email. "Thanks for choosing us. If you're happy with the work, we'd really appreciate a quick Google review. One-click link below." Direct link to the painter's configured Google review profile.

    This is the high-value moment

  3. Day 14 — Payment reminder (friendly). Sent only if a balance is outstanding. Friendly tone. Same drip system, different purpose — recovers slow-paying clients without making the review request awkward.
  4. Day 30 — Payment reminder (firm). Sent only if balance is still outstanding after the Day 14. Firmer tone. Final scheduled touch in the sequence.

The cadence (Day 0 / 7 / 14 / 30) is configurable per painting business. The whole sequence can be disabled per-organisation or per-project via email preferences.

Why Day 7 is the high-value moment

Two psychological factors converge on Day 7:

Day 30 is too late for a fresh review — by then the client has moved on and the request feels intrusive. That's why Surfacely uses Day 7 for the review ask and uses Days 14/30 for a different problem entirely (payment recovery), rather than re-asking for the review three times.

Setting it up

For the Day 7 review email to include a one-click Google review link, the painter sets emailPreferences.reviewLink on their org to their Google review profile URL (the one ending in .../review). Without it, the email still goes out — but with a portal-visit message instead of a review message. Setting the link is a 30-second job and is the highest-leverage settings change a painter can make.

There is a lot of instructions on how to set up your business on Google to receive reviews of your work.

What makes a useful review

Generic "Great job!" reviews don't help. Useful reviews mention:

Surfacely's Day 7 review email includes a prompt: "If you have a moment, mentioning the specific work done and one thing we did well helps other clients find us."

Why reviews drive AI results too

Clients are no longer only searching on Google or Safari, they are using AI to find the best business for their needs. Painters with strong review profiles are surfaced more often by AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude) when prospects ask "best painters near me". The review content also gets indexed, so the specific words clients use describing the painter's work become discoverable. Reviews aren't just a closing aid — they're 'tech talk ingredients' for the big platforms to know about your business and recommend you to others at the same time.
