How Much Paint Do I Need? Spread Rates and a Worked Example
The arithmetic is short: area × coats ÷ spread rate, plus about 10% for wastage. A litre of interior acrylic covers roughly 14–16 m² per coat (about 570–650 ft² per gallon) on a smooth, sound wall. So an average 4 × 5 m room, walls and ceiling, two coats, needs about 9.3 litres — in practice a 10 L tin of wall paint and a 4 L tin of ceiling paint. Every number below is a buying guide, not a guarantee: porous, textured and bare surfaces drink more.
Paint spread rates by type
These are the coverage figures Surfacely uses in its product catalogue, per coat, on a surface in reasonable condition. Always prefer the rate printed on the tin you're actually buying — products vary, and premium lines often cover better than budget ones.

How surface condition changes coverage
Paint type sets the starting point; the surface decides how much of it soaks in. Surfacely prices paint on an eight-step porosity scale, and the spread between the ends of it is more than four to one.

Two practical consequences. A bare, porous surface can need two to three times the paint of a sound repaint — which is why sealing it first with a primer is usually cheaper than pouring topcoat into it. And spraying drops the effective rate about a step versus brush and roller, because some of the paint never lands on the surface.
The coats multiplier
Spread rates are quoted per coat, so coats multiply the volume directly. Two coats needs twice the paint of one.

Going dark-to-light is the classic case for a third coat. A tinted primer under two topcoats often gets there for less paint and less labour than three full topcoats.
The wastage allowance
Nobody gets every drop out of the tin. There's roller loading, what's left in the tray, cut-pots, drips and the dregs at the bottom. Quote bare coverage and you'll come up short at the paint shop.
Nudge it up for textured or thirsty substrates and jobs with a lot of fiddly cutting in; nudge it down for clean work on smooth, sound walls. Spraying needs more again, on top of this. It's the same 10% default Surfacely applies to every quote.
The formula
Four things to get right before you divide:
- Wall area is the room perimeter × ceiling height. Ceiling and floor area is length × width.
- Don't deduct small openings. Leave standard windows and doors in the wall area — the slow cutting-in around each one uses roughly what the opening saved. Deduct only genuinely large openings, like a sliding-door wall.
- Split by paint type. Walls, ceiling and trim are usually different products, so calculate and buy them separately.
- Round up to tin sizes. You can't buy 6.3 litres. You buy a 10 L tin, or two 4 L tins.

Worked example: a 4 × 5 m room
A bedroom 4 m × 5 m with a 2.4 m ceiling (about 13 × 16 ft with an 8 ft ceiling). Walls and ceiling, two coats, interior acrylic at 15 m²/L (610 ft²/gal), smooth sound plaster.

Note how the round-up dominates: the calculation says 9.3 litres and you walk out with 14, because tins come in the sizes they come in. That leftover isn't waste — it's your touch-up paint. If the room also gets trim done, add roughly 1–2 litres (about a quart to half a gallon) of enamel for the skirting, architraves and one door.
Why the real number moves
The figures above are honest estimates, not a guarantee. Actual coverage moves with:
- Porosity. Bare plaster, raw timber and old chalky render pull paint in. Sealing first is usually the cheaper path.
- Texture. A textured or rendered wall has far more real surface area than its measured area suggests.
- Colour change. Deep bases, strong reds and yellows, and dark-to-light changes all need more coats.
- Application. Spray, roller nap and how heavily it's laid on all shift the rate.
- Conditions. Hot, windy or very dry weather makes exterior work thirstier.
